Kazakhstan will start supplying sodium cyanide to Tajikistan in the end of 2014. Sodium cyanide is an extremely toxic substance used to extract gold and silver from ore, Dknews.kz writes.

Joint Chemical Company, part of Samruk-Kazyna National Welfare Fund, signed a memorandum with Tajik companies Zaravshan and Aprelevka.

Sodium cyanide will be produced at the plant that is currently under construction at the territory of Chempart Taraz in Shu town of Zhambyl oblast. Its capacity will reach 25 thousand tons of sodium cyanide a year. The project will be the only such company in Central Asia. The production will be based on modern and ecologically safe technology.

According to deputy chairman of Joint Chemical Company Askhat Omarov, the target consumers of Kazakhstan’s sodium cyanide are gold-producing companies in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan that are currently using Chinese-made substances.

Tajikistan has over 30 fields that, according to experts, contain around 450 tons of raw gold. Tajikistan produced 2.2 tons of gold and 1.7 tons of silver in 2011.

Citizens of villages in Zhambyl oblast are not very happy with the hazardous neighborhood of the chemical plant. In spite of the fact that the constructors have all the permitting documents, local citizens are sure that the chemical company will have a significant effect on the ecology and the people’s health.
