Kazakhstan is planning to produce 4000 train car sets a year, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing Yerik Sultanov, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy Maintenance Vice-President, as saying a community board meeting.

“We are going to launch the project that has being implemented since 2007 at VostokMashZavod factory in Ust-Kamenogorsk. This is a project of car casting based on a German-Japanese technology. We haven’t done car casting in Kazakhstan before and there is a good market potential in Kazakhstan. The capacity of this plant will be at 4000 car sets a year,” Yerik Sultanov said.

According to the company’s Vice-President, VostokMashZavod factory in Ust-Kamenogorsk was on the verge of bankruptcy in 2011. The factory was privately owned then. Last year Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (Kazakhstan national railway company) decided to purchase 95% of the enterprise.

Yerik Sultanov said that Parkhomenko factory in Karaganda would be working on launching car casting this year and factories in Pavlodar and Temirtau would start the work in 2013. “This way we will be able to provide for production of 16.5 thousand train car sets in total annually,” Sultanov said.

According to Sultanov, the Ust-Kamenogorsk plant is also launching a drilling equipment production unit now. “We are going to launch one more new production unit at the factory this year. It was assembled back in 2007, but remained idle because of some administrative problems. This year the production unit will start operating at its full capacity that will make 10 thousand drilling heads totally worth 1.8 billion tenge ($12.2 million),” the national company’s Vice-president said.

He also told about other railway engineering projects. According to him, Astana locomotive assembly factory that uses American General Electric technology has already produced 130 locomotives this year. At present these freight locomotives are undergoing certification tests in Russia and Estonia. The company has already signed Memorandums on export of more than 100 of these locomotives. He expects the Estonian certificate to be obtained as early as this year.

Besides, the company signed one more Memorandum with General Electric on production of diesel engines at the 5th Astana Economic Forum. The capacity of this future production is going to be 400 units per year. “The line of products will be quite diverse; we will produce 3400 kilowatt engines for our locomotives,” Sultanov said.

One more factory producing electric locomotives will be put into operation this year: the joint factory of French Alstom and Russian Transmasholding. The capacity of this enterprise will make up 50 mainline electric locomotives a year. Railway motors for these locomotives will be produced at Atbasar enterprise. Besides, Kazakhstan factories are considering production of more than 250 parts for the future electric locomotives.
