Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (national railroad company) secured a record shipment of 8.5 million tons of grain in the first 7 months of 2012, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the company’s press-service. The shipment included local transportation of 2.2 million tons and export of 6.3 million tons.

Representatives of the national railroad company, Agriculture Ministry, Kazakhstan and Russian companies, grain traders and elevators discussed arrangement of transportation of the new harvest grain at the meeting in Kazakhstan Temir Zholy headquarters. Opening the meeting, the participants stated that 9 million tons of grain and 2.4 million tons of flour were exported during the 2011-2012 season (from September 2011 to July 2012).

A bumper harvest of 2011, as well as the help from the state that subsidized export, helped ensure a record shipment of 12.3 million tons (including flour in grain equivalent), which had a positive effect on freeing elevators for reception of the new harvest. Grain transportation involved a whole stock of Kazakhstan grain carriers, covered and low-sided wagons. Local transportation involved 2,020 new low-sided wagons, including 1,000 low-sided wagons with liftoff covers. Additionally, around 5,000 grain carriers of other railroad companies were involved every month, including the rolling stocks of such wagon operators like RusAgroTrans, TechnoTrans, Baltic Grain House and Balt-Trans.

According to Vice-Minister of Agriculture Muslim Umiryaev, farmers harvested 41 percent of the crops by the end of August. This year’s forecasted grain harvest is to make 13 million tons. With 9.8 million tons of grain remaining from previous years, the total volume of grain will make 22.8 million tons. The local needs of Kazakhstan market stand at 8.5 million tons. This means that the export potential of Kazakhstan grain will make 12 million tons. Thus, it is necessary to ensure transportation of around 1 million tons of grain per month. Kazakhstan railroads have been sustaining such tense schedule of transportation at a stable level during the past year.

The participants of the meeting discussed many important issues related to transportation of grain and flour: from technical condition of access roads to terms of provision of train cars and wagons.

Kazakhstan Temir Zholy takes all possible measures to secure fast transportation of Kazakhstan’s grain. This work is performed jointly with oblast administrations, state authorities and exporters.

This year Kazakhstan Temir Zholy is buying grain carriers for the first time in its history. According to the company, the plan is to purchase 14,756 cargo wagons in 2012, including 1,261 grain carriers and 2,000 covered wagons. 6,887 wagons were put into operation in August, including 65 grain carriers and 849 covered wagons.
