Athletes’ Village and Ice Stadium will be built in Almaty for Winter Universiade

An Athletes’ Village with a capacity of 5000 people and an Ice Stadium will be constructed in Almaty before the 28th Winter Universiade that will be held in Almaty in 2017, Tengrinews.kz reports referring to Zhanat Aytleu, first deputy director of Almaty Architecture and City Planning Department. Hockey matches along with the Universiade’s opening and closing ceremonies will be held at the new Ice Stadium. A sport complex, supermarket, medical center, swimming pool, stadium, cinema theater and hotels capable of accommodating five thousand people will be constructed as part of the Athletes’ Village. The total area of the complex will make more than 20 hectares. “The Universiade sites will be located in two places of the city. The first one is situated in Alatau region along Momyshuly Street. The Athletes’ Village meant for five thousand people will be built there. The Ice Stadium will also be situated along Momyshuly Street next to the concert hall that is being constructed now. A warming-up skating rink will be situated near the Ice Stadium as well,” Aytley said. Besides the new facilities, the competitions will also be held at the existing sports sites in Almaty. Almaty Baluan Sholak Sport Palace, International Ski Jumping Complex, Medeu high-altitude sport complex, Shymbulak Mountain Skiing Resort and Biathlon Complex will host the Universiade’s sport events. Figure skating, short track speed skating, skiing, snowboarding, biathlon, cross-country skiing, hockey, curling, freestyle, ski jumping, bandy and speed skating competitions will be held as part of the 2017 Almaty Universiade in Kazakhstan.
