Kazakhstan is getting ready for an inflow of tourist during EXPO-2017 and will increase the capacity of Astana and Almaty airports, Tengrinews reports citing Interfax-Kazakhstan.

according to the Deputy Chairman of Civil Aviation Committee of Transport and Communication Ministry of Kazakhstan Serik Mukhtybayev.

“We are pleased to announced that our passenger flow is growing from year to year, and to accommodate this we are planning to reconstruct the Astana and Almaty airports and increasing the capacity of their passenger terminals. We are planning to almost double the capacity of the airports in Almaty and Astana by 2017. These plans are part of our preparations for the EXPO-2017,” Serik Mukhtybayev, Vice-Chairman of the Civil Aviation Committee of the Transport and Communication Ministry of Kazakhstan, said in his Cargo Aviation Day speech in Astana on January 29.

Vice-Chairman Mukhtybayev added that the planned reconstruction will also increase the cargo flows via the airports. "We have a large-scale reconstruction project that involves both the government and private investors. Almaty is our primary hub," he said.

"Currently there are some problems related to the tear and wear of our airports' infrastructure," he said, but added that these problems are not the ones that had been causing a decrease in the cargo flows via the Kazakhstan airports. The decrease was mostly caused by escalation of jet fuel prices and the general redistribution of the cargo flows in the region, he explained.

Almaty airport served 4.3 million passengers in 2013, 8% more than in 2012. While its freight turnover decreased by 5% in 2013 (from 2012) and made 66.6 thousand tons.

The Almaty airport - the largest airport in Kazakhstan - was built in 1935. It is fully owned by Venus Airport Investments B.V., registered in Amsterdam.

Astana airport served 2.6 million passengers in 2013, 13% more than in 2012. The freight turnover of the airport in 2013 didn't changed from 2012 and made 8.3 thousand tons.

The Astana Airport is the second largest international airport in Kazakhstan. It is state-owned.
