Almaty will be fully supplied with gas in 2013, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Director General of KazTransGas Serik Sultangali as saying at the ceremony of launching Almaty-Taldykorgan gas pipeline.

“Our unique city of Almaty will always have its place in the history of Kazakhstan. It will be 100-percent supplied with gas next year. We will transfer all its heat power stations to gas (from coal) by the beginning of the heating season. I think it will be a big contribution of the President (into development of the city) and a big gift to Almaty residents,” Sultangali said.

The launch ceremony of construction of Almaty-Taldykorgan gas pipeline was held on September 29 not far from Uzynagash village in Almaty oblast. The ceremony was attended by Almaty oblast Akim (Governor) Ansar Mussakhanov. He traditionally cut the ribbon with Sultangali and workers performed the first pipe welding work to launch the construction process. Akim and Director General of KazTransGas put their autographs on one of the pipes.

The gas pipeline will be 264.8km long and will cover 7 regions of the oblast. The first stage of the project’s implementation provides for gas supply to 104 oblast’s villages with a population of around 350 thousand people. Special attention will be given to Taldykorgan city. The plan is also to later extend the pipeline by 230km to supply gas to 72 more remote villages of Sarkand and Alakol regions.

The project costs 20 billion tenge ($133 million). The construction is scheduled to be completed by December 2014.
