Kazakhstan is going to construct 41 waste-processing plants, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan Environmental Protection Minister Nurlan Kapparov as saying at the seminar on implementation of green economy principles and ensuring Kazakhstan’s sustainable development.

“Wastes processing is one of the small elements of the green economy. This is one of the sectors that will be developing. It is very important. We have a plan to start construction of 9 plants in the nearest two years; feasibility studies have already been completed for them. Next year we plan to start implementing these projects with both local and foreign investors. Agencies for Construction and Housing and for Community Amenities have developed a schedule of construction of 41 plants within the next 10-15 years,” Kapparov said.

According to the Minister, the plan is to open one such plant in Astana in October. “As for Astana, the waste-processing plant will be opened, if I’m not mistaken, on October 10. Spanish technologies were employed in construction of the plant. The Astana waste-processing plant will process 400 thousand tons of wastes a year. It will fully meet Astana's needs,” he said.

As for the plant built in Almaty, it still remains idle because of its owner’s problems. “Almaty plant is not operating for economic reasons. It will start working as soon as the owners resolve their problems,” Kapparov added.

The Minister stated that Kazakhstan's Environmental Protection Ministry started developing a strategy of sustainable development of green economy jointly with international experts. The strategy should be ready within 6-12 months.

According to Kapparov, Kazakhstan has already started implementing four blocks of the green economy, even without the strategy. These blocks include development of renewable energy sources, promoting power efficiency and energy saving, construction of waste-processing plants and low-carbon development, i.e. CO2 sales market. The respective draft laws are already being reviewed by the parliament and all these blocks are scheduled to start a full-scale work next year.
