American militarymen will get treatment with stem cells in Astana

American militarymen with heavy wounds will be treated with stem cells in the National Scientific Medical Center in Astana, Tengrinews.kz reports. “Within several months we are planing to bring here the patients with severe head injuries and hold clinical tests on the soldiers with hopeless heavy brain wounds received at war. We hope that this center will become the best place for such treatment and produce good results,” Vice-President of Stemedica David Howe said at the press-conference in Astana. Treatment of American patients in the Center is held as part of the Achievement of Global Leadership project. First patients arrived in 2010. Currently there are 11 patients from the U.S. in the Center. Each of them had transplantation of the human stem cells done. “Starting from 2003, the National Scientific Medical Center started to perform first clinical tests on so called stem cells, that are now differentiated as fetal, Mesenchymal cells. Within that period we performed researches in 7 different directions related to treatment of serious diseases. We work with those groups of people who suffer from diseases that cannot be treated by usual medicine. These are liver diseases, diabetes of both types, diseases of nervous system, chronic kidney disease, joints and thyroid body diseases,” Director General of the National Scientific Medical Center Abai Baigenzhin said. American company Stemedica is a partner in the cell technologies project. It is aimed for 5 years and will be implemented in several stages: implementation of the international standards in Kazakhstan, performance of clinical tests on foreign patients, as well as testing Kazakhstan cell technologies at the territory of the U.S. Earlier Tengrinews.kz English reported that medical tourism to Astana is becoming popular among foreigners.
