Giant fish eats 4ft shark in just one bite26 august 2014, 19:03
A goliath grouper has eaten a four-foot blacktip shark in just one bite. The video capturing the shark being swallowed by the giant grouper went viral on the Internet, Tengrinews reports.
Since the moment it was posted on Youtube on August 19, 2014 by Gimbb14, the video has received over 29 million views.
Gimbb14 was fishing off the coast of Bonita Springs along Florida's Gulf Coast with a couple of other fishermen when he finally hooked a shark. Could he possibly expect what happened next?
Groupers typically have a stout body and a large mouth. They are not built for long-distance, fast swimming. They can be quite large - over a meter long and weight as much as 100 kg.
They swallow their prey whole rather than biting pieces off it. They habitually eat fish, octopuses, and crustaceans. They do not have many teeth on the edges of their jaws, but they have heavy crushing tooth plates inside the pharynx.
Their mouths and gills form a powerful sucking system that sucks their prey in from a distance. They also use their mouths to dig into sand to form shelters under big rocks, jetting the sand out through their powerful gills.
