Perhaps thinking things couldn't get any worse, Prince Albert of Monaco decided Wednesday that now was a good time to nominate him for the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Thousands of people worldwide, from pop stars like Justin Bieber and even former US president George Bush, have taken part in the charity stunt to raise awareness of neurodegenerative disease ALS.

Participants pour the freezing water over themselves and then challenge two or three other people to do the same, or else make a donation to the cause.

In a video posted on his official Facebook page, Prince Albert -- dressed in a white shirt -- douses himself in ice-cold water before nominating the French president to do the same.

Prince Albert said he had been nominated by many people, including the Irish rugby player Brian O'Driscoll, and said he was happy to take part in an "extraordinary project" and donate personally to the charity.

As well as the man from the Elysee, he nominated Nike founder Philip Knight and prince Haakon of Norway to go next.

On August 29, the ALS Association said more than $100 million (76 million euros) had been raised in donations since it started the challenge, compared with $2.8 million during the same period last year.
