Kazakhstan spent over 500 thousand tenge per convict in 2012

Detention of one convict in the prison cost Kazakhstan budget 580 thousand tenge ($3,9 thousand) in 2012, Kursiv.kz writes citing deputy Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan Zhakip Assanov.

For example, 1.7 million tenge ($11 thousand) was spent on detention of the citizen of North-Kazakhstan oblast sentenced to three years for theft of property worth 10 thousand tenge ($67), Assanov said at the first prison reform forum held in Astana.

“According to the international standards, the criminal legislation and prison management can be considered duly organized only is the ratio is 150 convicts per 100 thousand of the population,” Assanov noted. According to him, the ratio in Kazakhstan is 316 convicts per 100 thousand people.

The first prison reform forum called Probation and Electronic Bracelets instead of Prisons is attended by representatives of Kazakhstan President’s Administration, ministries and authorities, local executive bodies, diplomatic missions, non-governmental organizations, as well as the scientists and the international experts.
