Scientists of the National University of Mexico made a list of “irreplaceable” ecosystems of the world that are home to unique species of sea and river animals, RIA Novosti reports. The Caspian Sea has been included in this list. The scholars studies geographic areas of all the 129 species of sea and river mammals and made a global ecological map for each of the species. They analyzed the results and identified nine key areas responsible for 84% of all the species. “Besides, we identified 11 "irreplaceable" areas. These areas are of major importance in terms of environment protection and can become the first step for adoption of a global ecological strategy with clearly identified geographic goals for preservation of water biodiversity,” the article written by the scientists of the Mexico University says. Besides the Caspian Sea the list of “irreplaceable” ecosystems includes Lake Baikal, Hawaii, the Galapagos Islands, the Amazon River basin, the Mediterranean Sea, the Yangdze, Indus and Gang Rivers, Chilean San Felix and Juan Fernández islands and the French Kerguelen Archipelago in the southern part of the Indian Ocean. The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed body of water on Earth by area, variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea. The sea has a surface area of 371,000 square km and a volume of 78,200 cubic km. It is in an endorheic basin (it has no outflows) and is bordered by Russia to the north, by Iran to the south, by Azerbaijan to the west, and by Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to the east.
