Kazakhstan Environmental Protection Ministry has attracted McKinsey to work out a strategy on the country’s transition to the green economy, Tengrinews.kz reports.

“We hired McKinsey company to work out this strategy. It will consist of several blocks: energy, energy efficiency, water, sustainable agriculture, wastes disposal and macroeconomics,” Kazakhstan Environmental Protection Minister Nurlan Kapparov said at the round-table meeting on development of the strategy for Kazakhstan’s transition to the green economy.

He noted that in power Kazakhstan 80 percent relies on coal and the rest is covered by hydropower and gas.

“We have prepared 4-5 scenarios of development of our energy basket until 2050. The Strategy-2050 announced by our President in December is our starting point. The strategy sets a goal for Kazakhstan to achieve generation of 50 percent of the power from alternative renewable sources by 2050. And this is our main drive,” he said.

The Minister said that the developed document is very important for Kazakhstan and “will first of all consider the interests of the vulnerable social groups, as well as the regional development interests”.

McKinsey Director Matt Rogers was invited for discussion of the strategy. According to Kapparov, Rogers served as the Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Energy for Recovery Act Implementation for two years and worked on development of the strategy and motivation measures for modernization of the U.S. energy sector.
