The hazardous substances that was spilled because of the crash of Proton-M rocket at Baikonur cannot reach the nearby villages in Kyzylorda oblast in large amounts, Tengrinews.kz reports citing head of KazKosmos (Kazakhstan Space Agency) Talgat Mussabayev. “The tanks with oxygen, heptyl and amyl were falling down simultaneously. This means that there was a simultaneous explosion and the heptyl burnt almost completely. It his case it transforms into nitrogen oxide that is not very toxic and not very hazardous for people. The massive crash results in huge amounts of soil going up in the air. It looks like a yellow-brown cloud, but it is (a dist and soil cloud that is) not as hazardous as it looks,” Mussabayev said at the government meeting. The weather was raining which is good. “There were three tails (of the crash cloud): one moving towards the city, one in the direction of Karmakshy and the third to Kazalinsk. The rain improved the situation, i.e. the tails are unlikely to reach the villages and towns,” he said. According to him, the rocket was carrying around 600 tons of heptyl, amyl and relatively small amount of kerosene and oxygen. “The laboratory in Baikonur has started working. I instructed them not to wait for the Russian experts. But we have to understand that the measurements we make, air samples, will not be legitimate for making the mutual decision,” he added.
