About 16 thousand trees have been planted in Almaty this spring, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Gulnar Sarzhanova, head of Almaty City Natural Resources and Environment Management Department.

“We have sawed down more than 6000 trees since the beginning of the year,” Sarzhanova said. The three years total of sawed down trees has reached 18 thousand.

According to Sarzhanova, there are about 18 thousand of hazardous trees in Almaty now. These are mostly poplars and elms that were planted several decades ago. “79 trees fell across roads, on residential houses roofs and residents’ cars last year. Only two trees fell down during heavy rains this year,” Environmental Management Department head said.

Since 2011 Almaty Akimat (municipal authorities) has been implementing a program to rejuvenate the city's vegetation. "Old trees that no longer have any beautification value or pose danger for the city's residents in case of a storms are being cut down as part of the program. We have started the cutting of hazardous trees from the sites along main roads,” Sarzhanova said. Old poplars and elms that grew along Furmanov Street and Dostyk Avenue were cut down last year. Young maples, ashes, oaks and decorative bushes were planted instead.
