Eastern Kazakhstan is preparing for the flood period that is expected to start in the third decade of March, Tengrinews.kz reports citing East-Kazakhstan oblast's Emergency Situations Department. The Department has declared that the floods may hit 157 villages with the total population of over 80 thousand people in case of intensive warming and fast snow melting. In this relation the Department has organized monitoring and forecasting of the situation to tackle the floods threat with 35 hydrological and 29 meteorological posts involved. “East-Kazakhstan hydrometeorology center is providing the Emergency Situations Department with daily hydro-bulletin on the condition of water facilities, as well as with information on snow reserves at the territory of the oblast. A daily space monitoring of snow melting and river breakups is made starting from March 1,” the press-service says. According to East-Kazakhstan’s KazHydroMet (national weather service) the water equivalent of snow exceeds the standards by 15-60 percent at the plain territories of the oblast. “The water equivalent of snow currently exceeds the standards by 107 to 160 percent in Shemonaikhin, Urdzharsk, Kokpekty, Kurchum, Zharmin, Glubokovsk regions of the oblast. The average snow height in the plain areas varies from 13 to 112cm. Excessive accumulation of snow has been registered in mountainous areas that are the stocks-forming areas for rivers during flood periods. The snow cover is 44-66 percent over the standard and up to 253cm thick in the mountainous areas,” the Department reports. Several groups of people and vehicles of East-Kazakhstan oblast Emergency Situations Department, including 844 employees, 149 vehicles, 22 floating vehicles and 9 power pumps are prepared for quick elimination of possible floods in the oblast. First floods have already been registered in the area since the beginning of March. Employees of the Emergency Situations Department and teams from Oskemen-Tartip and Oskemen-SpetsKommunTrans are cleaning up sereval streets in Krassina village.
