The flood area in Kazakhstan's Pavlodar oblast may cover over 80 thousand residents, Tengrinews.kz reports citing head of Pavlodar oblast energy and public utilities department Sain Kamenov. “The oblast has 75 villages in the lowlands that may be largely flooded after snow melting and heavy rains. Over 80 thousand people live there and might face the flood problem,” Kamenov said. According to him, anti-flood works are already in process in the towns and regions of the oblast. An emergency response team was formed by the Emergency Situations Department to help the residents. According to the weather forecasts, the amount of precipitations over the last months was almost double the average amount. “With the average standard of 45mm of the precipitations, 70mm of precipitations fell in the oblast from November to January. The height of the snow mantle is currently 23 cm against the standard of 14cm,” Pavlodar branch of KazHydroMet (national weather service) said. Kazakhstan Emergency Situations Ministry is preparing to face the floods in Almaty obast and Karaganda oblast as well. According to Emergencies Minister Vladimir Bozhko, the floods can be expected in case of a sharp warming and early spring. He noted that Zhambyl and East-Kazakhstan oblasts are also in the critical zone.
