Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has ordered an investigation into the violence in the western town of Zhanapzen that left 11 people dead and 86 injured, RIA Novosti writes. "The President has established a government commission led by Umirzak Shukeyev to look into the situation in Zhanaozen" Kazakhstan Prime Minister Karim Masmov wrote in Twitter on Saturday after the meeting of the National Security Council. President Nazarbayev declared a state of emergency in Zhanaozen at the meeting. The confrontation in Zhanaozen came as police tried to clear protesters from the town’s main square after they started crashing equpment, attacking fellow citizens and setting nearby cars on fire. The workers had been protesting for higher wages for several months, but this was the most fierce outbreak of violence so far. Prosecutor General Askhat Daulbayev said that the mayor’s office, a hotel and police vehicles were set on fire during the “mass disturbances,” RIA Novosti reports.
