Kazakhstan renders aid both to nations hit by unexpected crises and nations facing lingering crises

“Kazakhstan renders aid both to nations hit by unexpected crises and nations facing lingering crises such as Somali facing famine, Afghanistan facing protracted conflicts (…) It’s a surprising discovery”, KazTag Agency reports, citing Mr. Marcel Vaessen, Head of Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) Regional Office for Caucasus and Central Asia, as saying at a press conference August 22.

According to him, Kazakhstan has been rendering aid not limiting to direct aid packages. “Kazakhstan preferred to render direct aid to governments of countries affected by crises. 85% of all humanitarian aid has been direct. However, recently Kazakhstan hasn’t been limiting its aid efforts to the so-called bilateral format. Last year the nation allocated over $1.5 million to support the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and UN agencies”, Mr. Vaessen said.

According to KazTag, since 2006 Kazakhstan’s humanitarian aid to Central Asia nations totaled $60 million, with $4 million being provided in monetary form.
