Family of pilot killed in MIG-31 crash receives 1 million tenge

Akim (Governor) of Karaganda oblast Baurzhan Abdishev transferred material support in amount of 1 million tenge ($6.7 thousand) to the family of Marat Yedigeev who died in the crash of MIG-31 military aircraft, KazTAG reports citing the Akim's press-service.

"Akim Abdishev visited the family of the commander of Karaganda aviation base Colonel Marat Yedigeev. The Oblast Akim expressed condolences to the family and passed 1 million tenge in material aide," the press-service stated.

According to Abdishev, the authorities are ready to render any other support to the pilot's family. "A meeting was held at the territory of the aviation base on April 26. The colleagues paid their last tribute the the commander. Yedigeev will be buried in Kostanay oblast where he was born," the press-service wrote.

MIG-31 military plane of the military department 50185 of the Defense Ministry crashed during a training flight on April 23, 2013 at 10:41 p.m. Equipment failure was the main reason of the aircraft's crash. The Defense Ministry's press-service reported that the aircraft underwent an overhaul in Russia on December 31, 2012. It was on warranty maintenance and flew only 42 hours after the overhaul. The crew ejected themselves from the plane before the crash. Commander pilot Colonel Marat Yedigeev died and aeronavigator Major Ruslan Galimzyanov was hospitalized with injuries.

According to Kazakhstan Air Defense Forces Commander in Chief Aleksander Sorokin, flights of MIG-31 aircrafts in Kazakhstan will be suspended until the reasons of the crash are identified.

Meanwhile, a state commission was formed and representatives of the Russian plant were invited, as well as experts of Russian security service and representatives of Russian Ministry of Aviation Industry. According to the Defense Ministry, MIG-31 aircrafts are used by Russian and Kazakhstan defense forces only.

A criminal case was initiated by military prosecutors in relation to the crash on the Article 392 of Kazakhstan Criminal Code (violation of rules for flights and preparation to flights). The investigation is underway.
