The landlide-prone slope of Koktobe mount in Almaty will be reinforced in May, Tengrinews.kz reports. The works to strengthening the Western slope along Sakhariyev street have been run since March. According to Marat Issakulov, Executive Director of the construction company working on this project, the emergency condition will be eliminated by May 9, 2012. The project costs 23 million tenge ($155 thousand). 12m-high concrete wall will be erected across the slope. Besides, the rain and melt water drainage system will be installed on the hill. The dangerous situation manifested itself on the slope in spring 2012, when the snow started melting. At that time water drainage channels were being installed on the hill. Issakulov noted that this measure helped prevent the landslide that would have damaged the neighboring houses. Three private houses are located right under the slope. Last autumn their owners received emergency notifications, but they did not want to leave their houses. Right now there is no immediate threat of landslide, as it has been sunny in Almaty lately and the soil is dry on the slope. Meanwhile, the regional administration blames the houses' owners for the current situation. According to the head of the municipal service Yermek Tlekenov, local citizens are digging holes in the slope. Water that washes out the soil gets accumulated in these holes. The slope is mainly made of by clays that people use for construction and other needs. The soil started sliding on Koktobe mount in autumn 2011. City emergency situations services checked the slope and found a crack in it. They also discovered that the soil caved in at one of the road parts.
