Chess has officially been introduced into Karaganda school curriculum as a new school subject, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing KTK TV Channel.

Karaganda city authorities came to this decision after Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, World Chess Federation (FIDE) president, visited the region. He said that chess classes introduced in elementary school program had a positive effect on the children’s overall school results and intellectual development in Kalmykia Republic. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was the first president of Kalmykia in 1993-2010.

“There is an instruction from the Akim (governor) of the oblast to open chess clubs not only in the city of Karaganda, but also throughout the oblast,” Karaganda Education Department Dulat Zhekebayev head said.

The teachers themselves found out about the new subject in the curriculum only two weeks before the beginning of the academic year. Chess classes will be held once a week. All schools of the city are now purchasing chess sets. The officials have promised to provide additional training for those teachers who will be teaching the chess classes at schools. Officials are also planning to arrange chess tournaments among schoolchildren on a regular basis.

According to the experts, special methods and programs are required for teaching chess as a school subject. However, oblasts’ authorities are not going to start training any narrow profile teachers specializing in chess in the region. No unified chess school programs have been developed either.

Earlier this week 12-y.o. Zhansaya Abdumalik approached the President of the country Nursultan Nazarbayev with the idea to introduce chess into Kazakhstan school program curriculum and got the President’s approval.
