One more earthquake felt in Almaty04 december 2014, 14:20
Almaty residents have felt an earthquake today at 11.25 a.m. Astana time, Tengrinews reports.
The Department of Emergency Situations has confirmed the information about the earthquake.
According to the Seismological Experimental-Methodical Expedition of the Committee of Science of Kazakhstan's Ministry of Education, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 31 kilometers south-east of Almaty. The magnitude at the epicenter was 4.7 with the depth of 15 kilometers. The tremor was felt as a magnitude of 2-3 in Almaty.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported the earthquake’s magnitude was 3.9 and its depth was one kilometer.
There have been no reports of destruction or casualties.
Eyewitnesses say the earthquake was preceded by a low rumbling. One eyewitness Karlygash Akhmetkaliyev said it sounded as if "something huge fell”.
Another person from Almaty also said it felt like something fell sending a single strong shock. “Terribly scary,” she said.
“It felt like a hit, not good, scary,” another person said.
“My ceiling lamp started to swing and it left like a wave coming from south-east,” another said about the earthquake.
Reports suggest that the tremors could be clearly felt in Almaty Towers. But a man working on the 9th floor of Nurly Tau said nobody felt anything in his office.
Some Almaty residents say that the earthquake seemed stronger than M2, more like 3 or 4. In addition, some people find it worrisome that the tremors have become more frequent in Almaty in Kazakhstan's south.
But others find this unwarranted. “Well, better the tremors be this small and frequent, than a single strong earthquake.”
“I, on the contrary, think ... it's good [small tremors]. They release the tension in the earth,” another supporter of the view said.
