Kyrgyzstan is facing critical natural gas shortage

03 march 2011, 13:01
Kyrgyzstan is facing a critical natural gas shortage due to production and supply disruption in the neighbouring Central Asian republic of Uzbekistan, AFP reports.

Yevgeny Orlenko, deputy head of Kyrgyzstan's natural gas company said the republic had stopped receiving Uzbek gas deliveries on Saturday due to unseasonably cold temperatures that interrupted the regular production schedule.

The cutoff forced authorities to switch the capital's main thermal power plant to heating fuel and halt supplies to the production plants of companies such as Coca-Cola and Reemtsma, the German cigarette maker.

Kyrgyzstan, a mountainous republic with few natural resources, suffers from seasonal energy shortages.
