Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan will tour parts of the disaster zone along the country's northeast coast on Monday, including an area near a crippled nuclear power plant, AFP reports, quoting officials as saying on Sunday.

Kan is due to visit a football training center about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the quake-damaged Fukushima No. 1 plant -- now a staging area for emergency personnel working to avert a disastrous radiation release there.

He will also go to the devastated seaside city of Ishinomaki in Miyagi prefecture to speak to survivors of the 9.0-magnitude quake and ensuing tsunami that smashed into the country's Pacific coast on March 11, the officials said.

The prime minister had inspected the nuclear plant, 250 kilometers (155 miles) northeast of Tokyo, one day after the twin disasters.

The government has created a 20-kilometer exclusion zone around the plant and urged people within an additional 10-kilometer radius to stay indoors.
