Heavy rains have flooded 145 private houses and cellars of public institutions in Kokshetau on Monday, Tengrinews reports citing the Emergency Situations Department of Akmola Oblast. The forecasts are that the weather will stay rainy for at least a couple more days.
The heavy rain in Kokshetau started on 28 July at around 3 am. According to KazHydroMet, the national weather forecasting agency, precipitation was at the level of 39.0 mm, whereas the normal level for the area is between 1mm and 14mm.
“As a result of the rainfall in Kokshetau about 145 private houses and cellars of public institutions (Regional Court, the registrar, historical museum, presidential school) have been flooded. The buildings are located on Walikhanov (from Gorky to Kenesary), Gorky (at the intersection with the North Street), Kuibyshev, Kaptsevich, Mirzoyan, Baitursynov, Nauryzbai Batyr, Birzhan-sal, Dzhambul and Satpayev streets,” the Department said.
The emergency services are now pumping away the water using 12 pieces of equipment provided by the State Administration for Firefighting Service and Rescue Operations, two fire-pumping stations and 11 pieces of equipment provided the Kokshetau Utilities Services. Four mobile teams of the Akim’s office [governor] are monitoring the area.
KazHydroMet forecasts rainy weather in Kokshetau to persist until the end of the month, but the air temperature will rise to 26 degrees Centigrade.
