A Mexican soldier and four Colombian soldiers died on Monday when two helicopters collided during a training mission, wounding four other people, AFP reports citing the Colombian Air Force.

The dead included Mexican Lieutenant Dante Herrera Alarcon, a Colombian pilot, two crew members and a student, who were aboard a UH-1H conducting a training drill.

The wounded included Mexican Lieutenant Ivan Camilo Gonzalez Rada, another Colombian pilot, a trainee and a crew member.

The mid-air collision took place at 5:40 pm (2240 GMT) near the town of Melgar, 100 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of Bogota.

On March 1 four police officers and two civilians were killed when a helicopter delivering cash to a bank was attacked as it landed in southern Colombia.

The attackers -- who fled with an undisclosed amount of money -- were suspected of being tied to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which is active in the region, where clashes with government troops are common.

The Marxist FARC has been at war with the Colombian government since 1964.
