Two men with US and Mexican identity cards were killed Monday as they were about to enter the United States in a rare shooting at the San Ysidro border crossing from Tijuana to California, AFP reports citing officials.

The Baja California attorney general said an unidentified gunman shot the two victims -- aged 28 and 25 -- as they sat in a truck about 300 meters (less than 1,000 feet) from the US-Mexico border. Their vehicle had California license plates.

A Mexican voter identification card and a US passport was found on each of the men, a senior official with the prosecution said. But authorities were still trying to confirm their nationality.

Baja California Attorney General Rommel Moreno said detectives were investigating a possible drug link to the crime in Tijuana, a city with one of Mexico's highest rate of drug-related killings.

He said one of the victims was found with a "small packet of drugs among his belongings."

Mexico's raging drug war is blamed for most of the 34,600 killings that have been carried out since the federal government launched a massive national crackdown in late 2006 that so far failed to stem the bloody tide of violence.
