Two Kazakh diplomats who were convicted in Germany for cigarette smuggling have been transferred to the Kazakhstani authorities, Tengrinews reports citing Interfax-Kazakhstan.

"A month ago they were transferred to us," said on Wednesday, March 4, First Deputy Prosecutor General Johann Merkel. "And last year we transferred a citizen of Germany, who was convicted on drug related charges," he added.

In September 2013, the Consul General of Kazakhstan in Frankfurt Akhat Alpysbayev and his college Kairat Adyrov were arrested in Germany on suspicion of smuggling of cigarettes.

In April 2014, the two diplomats were sentenced to two years and eight months in prison. In July, Foreign Minister Yerlan Idrissov said that the Foreign Ministry will seek their extradition to Kazakhstan.
