General Prosecutor’s office has made a general portrait of Kazakhstan terrorist based on the statistics. It turned out that these are young people aged under 29. In most cases they are unemployed and have no higher education, Tengrinews.kz reports citing deputy General Prosecutor of Kazakhstan Iogan Merkel as saying at the first annual international conference of Kazakhstan union of lawyers and union of criminologists. “Speaking of the current religious situation in the country, we see a stable trend towards radicalization of the population: growth of groups with non-traditional religious views. The practice shows that representatives of such groups are prone to plotting terrorist attacks. Their communities get bigger through attraction of socially unstable young people with low incomes and insufficient knowledge in religion and basics of traditional Islam,” Merkel said in his report on the measures taken by authorities to counter terrorism and extremism. Deputy General Prosecutor gave a statistics of several years on persons apprehended for terrorism. According to this information, the prosecutors made a general portrait of a modern Kazakhstan terrorist. “148 people were convicted for terrorist crimes and 160 for extremism in the last 5 years. Of course, we have to ask the question on who stands behind these numbers. Who is this Kazakhstan terrorist? I would like to answer this question referring to our statistics. Almost 60 percent of convicted terrorists are aged under 29. In the other words, they are young. Almost all of them, i.e. 95 percent, were unemployed. Thus, we get a portrait of terrorists in Kazakhstan: these are young people who are trying to find their place in life but cannot. They are most frequently unemployed, have no good education or any further prospects. In this relation I would like to stress that Kazakhstan President’s instructions made at the second summit of Nur Otan youth wing and related to radical changes to the youth policy are very important,” Iogan Merkel said.
