In July, Azamat Tenizbayev, 18 was arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a British citizen on an airplane. He was on his way from the Taekwondo Championship in Mexico with the Taekwondo Federation when he reportedly accidentally touched the British woman seated next to him while he was sleeping. After being told off by the flight attendant, the teenager offered his apologies. The matter that seemed resolved led to a filed complained by the British national and the teenager’s arrest. His hearing took place on August 23. At the hearing the defense was able to prove that Tenizbayev had signed the admission of his guilt right after the incident in the plane due to his lack of English. The teenager’s lawyers filed a petition to release Tenizbayev on bail. Tenizbayev who spent a month in detention, now lives in a rented apartment. The teenager has to wear an electronic device on his leg and to report to the police station every day. To free their child and to pay for the lawyer, Tenizbayev’s family had to sell their apartment in Kazakhstan. The Taekwondo Federation initially promised to help their sportsman but in the end failed to live up the the promises. His mother Zhazira Tilesheva spent 3 month in London trying to help her son. “We had to solve many issues. We finally found a school in London where Azamat can study. We have been denied enrollment in other schools because my son does not have a visa but only a letter from the police. Only one school took us in despite the circumstances, ” said his mother. The next hearing is scheduled for January 6, 2014.
