One person was killed and another injured by an explosion in Aktobe National Security Commission Department, Tengrinews.kz reports. Some sources say that the explosion in the building was followed by shooting.

Special forces performed an operation in south-western part of Aktobe city to arrest several people suspected to be behind the explosion. The operation involved a helicopter.

According to witnesses from nearby houses, the suspects may be Wahhabis. The Islamic puritanical movements known as Wahhabism is known to have publicized and direct links with terrorism.

Rapid deployment forces have already left the operation site. The names of arrested suspects are still unknown. National Security Commission Department and police decline to give any official information before the investigation.

“There was an explosion, the bomber was killed. A criminal case is initiated and police is investigating,” RIA Novosti newswire reported citing one of its sources.

Interfax-Kazakhstan reports that the bomb was set off by a suicide bomber.

"A suicide bomber detonated an unknown device in front of the regional security services building. As a result of the explosion, there are casualties," a source within the security services told Interfax.

BNews reports that four people were injured by the blast, citing the chief doctor of Aktobe ambulance Aiman Amanzholova.

News reports said the security police were searching for alleged accomplices and had cordoned off a block of the city of 277,000 inhabitants.

According to AFP, such an attack is a hugely rare event in Kazakhstan, the most stable state in Central Asia which has been run since even before the fall of the Soviet Union by strongman President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Aktobe is a city in northwestern Kazakhstan, near the border with Russia. The blast took place outside the local headquarters of the Kazakhstan National Security Committee (KNB).
