Emails leaked; Kazakhstan files lawsuit to New York court

Kazakhstani authorities have filed a complaint with Manhattan Federal Court against a group of unknown hackers this Thursday, Bloomberg reports. The hackers broke into government computers and stole thousands of confidential e-mails of Kazakhstani officials, in particular an exchange with representatives of international law firm Curtis Mallet-Prevost Colt & Mosle LLP.

The hacked accounts included those of ranking Kazakh officials - Deputy Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan Andrey Kravchenko and Justice Ministry’s Executive Secretary Marat Beketaev.

The case was registered as The Republic of Kazakhstan v. Does 1-100, 15-cv-01900, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York (Manhattan).

The unauthorized access was discovered at the end of January this year. According to the court files, the stolen Gmail messages were published on various websites, including Facebook.

According to the website of Curtis Mallet-Prevost Colt & Mosle LLP, the firm advised the Republic of Kazakhstan regarding development of the Karachaganak oil and gas field in 2012 and on a settlement agreement with the consortium developing the Kashagan oil and gas field in 2014. It also consulted KazTransOil national company and Samruk Kazyna National Wealth Fund.
