'Canadian Psycho' trial takes photo tour of crime scene

 The trial of Luka Magnotta took a grim photographic tour Tuesday of the Montreal apartment where he butchered a Chinese student, and got a peek inside body-parts packages he sent in the mail, AFP reports.

Magnotta, 32, is accused of using an ice pick to fatally stab 33-year-old Lin Jun in May 2012, before sexually abusing and dismembering the man's corpse, and then posting a video of the heinous act online.

Days after the killing, Montreal police discovered the victim's torso in a suitcase by the trash outside an apartment building along a busy highway.

Lin's severed hands and feet were sent in the mail to federal political parties in Ottawa and to two elementary schools in Vancouver. The head was found in a Montreal park months later.

On the second day of the trial, the court was shown images taken by crime scene photographers from inside the blood-splattered apartment where Lin is believed to have been killed and dismembered.

According to testimony, police discovered blood stains throughout the home, including in the kitchen cupboards and fridge, on a bed mattress and a shower curtain, despite an apparent attempt by Magnotta to clean up after the killing.

The jury was also shown pictures of the victim's severed head, as well as hands and feet contained in black gift bags with pink tissue paper inside four parcels, some of which had black hearts badly drawn at the bottom.

Police officers testified that the accused included pink handwritten notes threatening violence against Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen, and others, in the parcels.

Magnotta misspelled Laureen Harper's first name and addressed the note using her maiden name, Teskey, the court heard.

After the killing, Magnotta fled Canada, but was arrested in Germany in June 2012, following an international manhunt, and extradited. He was arrested in a Berlin Internet cafe, after stops in France and elsewhere in Germany.

Magnotta has admitted to the facts in the case, including killing Lin, but pleaded not guilty at the start of the trial on Monday.

His lawyer said he intends to mount an insanity defense, telling the jury that Magnotta suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder, and should not be held criminally responsible.

The prosecution has alleged the killing was "planned and deliberate."

The trial is expected to last six to eight weeks.
