A couple from Whitinsville, Massachusets, is accused of raping two children they adopted from Kazakhstan, The Milford Daily News writes.

Linda Mayotte, 49, and her husband Joseph Mayotte, 50, are on trial on 26 charges each, including statutory rape of a child, indecent assault, battery on a child under 14 and incest. They were first arrested in 2009.

The children, were adopted from Kazakhstan orphanage and came to Whitinsville in 2004, at the age of 8 (girl) and 13 (boy). According to Assistant District Attorney Cheryl Riddle, the children “were foreign children, in an unfamiliar country with an unfamiliar language who were completely dependent on the defendants. Within a couple of months, the husband was sleeping in bed with (the girl) while the wife was with (the boy) sexually,” she said. The girl told about the abuse to a neighbor in 2007 but was too intimidated to report it to the police and social workers.

The now 21-year-old man who was allegedly was abused since he was 13 was the first witness called to the stand by Assistant District Attorney Cheryl R. Riddle. He testified that Ms. Mayotte would come to his bedroom at night and massage his abdomen when he had severe stomach pains and often ended up sleeping in his bed. Later she progressed to "baby kisses", inserting her tongue in his mouth, touching his genitals with her hand, having oral sex and sexual intercourse with him, he testified.

A DNA test was made during the trial. It confirmed that the adopted son is the father of Linda Mayotte’s third child.

Defense attorney Laurel Singer, representing Linda Mayotte said that her client was the victim of sex abuse, not the abuser. She said that her client was raped by her adopted son for four years. “He punched her, yelled at her and threatened to go to the police and accuse her of rape,” Singer said.

The attorney for Joseph Mayotte, Christopher LoConto, said that his client was unaware of what was going on between his wife and his adopted son and pleaded not guilty of abusing his adopted daughter. The man, he said, was sleeping with the girl only because she was afraid at night. “It was just a way to comfort a child in a whole new world,” he said.
