Newly appointed Chairman Yessimov lays off top management of Astana EXPO-201719 august 2015, 21:53
Akhmetzhan Yessimov, the newly appointed Chairman of the Board of Astana EXPO-2017 National Company has started restructuring the company and has nearly halved its top management, Tengrinews reports citing the press office of the National Company.
The reshuffling followed a massive scandal that tainted the company's image a month earlier, but it is not immediately clear whether the new layoffs have anything to do with the criminal cases.
In July, Astana EXPO-2017 saw some major corruption cases. Its former Chairman Talgat Yermegiyaev was relieved of his position as Chairman on June 11. Yermegiyaev was arrested and accused of embezzlement and misappropriation of another's property on a large scale through abuse of office, committed repeatedly. The investigation is underway. Meanwhile, the former Chairman is under the house arrest. Then Director of the company's Construction Department Kazhymurat Usenov along with Managing Director Sulambek Barkinkhoev were arrested. Later, Vera Kobalina left her post of the Deputy Chairman voluntarily along with several other top managers of the company.
On August 9, Yessimov, the former Akim (Mayor) of Almaty was appointed Chairman of Astana EXPO-2017 by the President of Kazakhstan. Nazarbayev stressed that Yessimov's experience was needed for organization of the EXPO-2017 in Astana. During the meeting with newly appointed Yessimov, the Head of the State called for quick and efficient solutions in preparation for the international exhibition.
One of the first things Yessumov did as the new Chairman was introducing a new organization structure of the national company that provisioned three Deputy Chairmen instead of five. The new Chairman also decreased the number of managing directors from nine to four. Several departments were merged resulting in 18 departments instead of 20. Astana EXPO-2017 also includes the branch of the Construction Management.
According to Yessimov, the new structure of the National Company prevents duplication of functions and facilitates effectiveness of organization work.
