A new uranium conversion plant will be built in Ulba Metallurgical Plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk by 2018, YK-news.kz writes. According to KazAtomProm, preparation of the feasibility study will start in 2014-2015. The target capacity of the plant is up to 6 thousand tons of uranium per year. “Along with construction of the new modern plant, we plan to launch the existing capacities for uranium processing in Ulba Metallurgical Plant constructed in the 1970s. In fact, this project is aimed at modernizing the existing production facility based on the modern global ecology and safety standards,” a representatives of the public relations department of KazAtomProm Kristina Podshivalova said. The project will be based on the advanced technology of the Canadian Cameco, the global leader in production and processing of natural uranium. The finished goods will be shipped to Canada for further processing and production of uranium fluoride (UF 6). “Construction of the plant will not aggravate the ecological situation in the region, as the Cameco’s technology provides for zero wastes level and full air protection from hazardous emissions. This technology is efficiently used by Canadian companies located close to natural preserved areas. The long-term statistics collected by independent Canadian ecological organizations certifies that the facility has no negative environmental effect,” the company states.
