Karachaganak Petroleum Operating has been fined for improper storage of 64.22 tons of liquid waste at Karachagank field, Tengrinews reports citing Moi Gorod.

Karachaganak field is a large gas condensate field in western Kazakhstan discovered in 1979 and producing gas and oil since 1984. Karachaganak Petroleum Operating (KPO) involves BG Group and ENI as joint operators with a 29.25% stake each, Chevron and Lukoil owning 18% and 13.5% respectively and KazMunayGas with a 10% stake. KPO has a production sharing agreement for development of Karachaganak filed until 2038.

According to Deputy Prosecutor of Burlinsk District Nurlybek Musagaliev, the wastes were stored in earth storages near one of the wells.

"Employees of Karachaganak Petroleum Operating failed to put in place the required waste handling security measures and failed to treat, neutralize and dispose of the waste as set forth by the project documents," Musagaliev said.

As a result Karachaganak Petroleum Operating faced a $159 thousand fine. In addition, the authorities are planning to claim $159 thousand more for the damage. The wastes are being examined to determine their exact composition. A pretrial investigation has been initiated.
