Citigroup says hackers viewed client accounts

10 june 2011, 10:41
US banking giant Citigroup said Thursday that computer hackers have accessed information in about one percent of accounts held by its bank card customers, AFP reports.

"During routine monitoring, we recently discovered unauthorized access to Citi's Account Online," it said in an emailed statement released in Hong Kong, referring to its online banking business, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

It wasn't immediately clear how the hackers got at the information and a Citigroup spokeswoman in Hong Kong could not be immediately reached.

The New York-based bank said that hackers didn't gain access to customers' social security numbers, dates of birth, card expiration dates or card security codes, Dow Jones said.

Citi is contacting customers whose information was viewed and has implemented procedures to prevent a recurrence of the security breach, the report said.
