Los Angeles to watch Kazakhstan movies

The first film festival called Kazakhstan: Montage of Cinemas will be held in Los Angeles on June 10-26. The festival is timed to the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan's independence, UCLA website writes.

Nine Kazakh movies will be screened during the festival. On June 11, the movie of Yermek Tursunov Kelin will open the show. It will be followed by two movies of Guka Omarova, Baksy (Native Dancer) and Schizo. These movies describe contemporary history of Kazakhstan.

Racketeer (by Akhan Satayev), Revenge (by Yermek Shinarbayev) and Land of the Fathers (by Shaken Aimanov) will also be shown at the festival.

New films were also selected for the festival in Los Angeles: Rustam Abdrashev's The Gift to Stalin about the after-war period in Kazakhstan and Nomad: The Warrior by Sergei Bodrov, Ivan Passer and Talgat Temenov.

The festival will be closed by Sergei Dvortsevoy's Tulpan. This film became the Winner of the Prix Un Certain Regard at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.

The idea to show Kazakhstan movies to Americans belongs to Gaukhar Noortas, actress and producer who is amous for her Kazakhstan-American projects and a Hollywood producer Steven-Charles Jaffe who is the Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan in Los Angeles.

The festival is organized by UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in New York. The festival will take place in Billy Wilder Theater at the Hammer Museum. Filmmakers Guka Omarova and Sergei Bodrov will attend the event in person.
