La Bayadere premiers at Astana Opera for Christmas23 november 2015, 17:27
Astana Opera presents one of the most popular and complex classical ballets La Bayadère, written by an influential French choreographer Marius Petipa on December 25 and 26, Tengrinews reports.
Artistic Director of Astana Opera Altynai Assylmuratova known once as prima ballerina of Mariinskiy Theatre is choreographing the ballet, while Arman Urazgaliev will conduct the orchestra playing the music composed by Ludwig Minkus. Ezio Figerio and Franca Squarciapino are working on the design of the ballet. The famous Italian artistic duo promises an exotic stagecraft for La Bayandere.
La Bayadère was first performed by the Imperial Ballet at the Imperial Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1877.
The Astana Opera presents Petipa’s classic with additions of fragments choreographed by Vakhtang Chabukiani and Nikolay Zubkovskiy.
Petipa brought a dramatic love story between an Indian bayandere (dancer) Nikiya and a warrior Solor. The couple cannot be together because High Brahmin fell in love with Nikiya, while Rajah Dugmanta chose the warrior as a future husband for his daughter Gamzatti. Jealous High Brahmin and Gamzatti try to separate the lovers. But even after death, Nikiya and Solor reunite in their eternal love.
“The ballet is rich with acting, solo and ensemble classic and specific dances. It also is enriched with grand march and pantomimic episodes. It is a big, complex and diverse material. Today there are a great number of various editions of La Bayandere, but we are presenting an academic ballet, which has nothing in excess. There will be some changes, but the fundamentals remain,” Asylmuratova said.
La Bayadère opens on December 25 and 26 at Astana Opera. The Opera House is situated at #12/1 Konayev Street in Astana.
