Ward wants to fight Golovkin in fall before Kovalev

The WBA (Super) super-middleweight champion Andre Ward wants to face Gennady Golovkin, the WBA (Super), IBO and WBC Interim from Kazakhstan, this fall, Tengrinews reports citing Dan Rafael of ESNP.

"GGG would fight Ward on a 50-50 basis, the best 160-pounder versus the best 168-pounder (at) 164 (and) a 50-50 split on all proceeds. But it seems like Ward needs more tune-up fights," Loeffler told ESPN.com.

"The Ward camp told me today their preference is to make GGG for this fall and then go after Kovalev, which makes sense. Ward isn’t going to go to light heavyweight and then come back down to face GGG. So face GGG now at whatever weight they can agree on and then, if all goes well, move to 175," Rafael said on his chat at ESPN.com.

Discussions for the Ward-Kovalev fight have already began. Kovalev's promoter Kathy Duva talked about the negotiations during the Kovalev-Mohammedi teleconference.

"We have been talking to Andre Ward's people all week. And I think we all agree the fight is going to happen. It is just a matter of when. The talks have been very amicable. They are deciding who they want to fight next, and we have Sergey's schedule for his next few fights planned. By the end of next year, maybe a little sooner, you’re going to get to see that fight,” Duva said.

As for Golovkin, it does not seem that he will get a title unification title this fall. The IBF title holder David Lemeiux has a mandatory fight due October 20. Meanwhile, Miguel Cotto, the WBC middleweight champion and Canelo Alvarez are possibly fighting in the Fall. Although, Golovkin holds the WBC interim middleweight title, Cotto was allowed to face Alvarez as an optional defense.
