Tennis: Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas beats world's No 22 in France

A professional tennis player from Kazakhstan Zarina Diyas has advanced into the second round of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Internationaux de Strasbourg tournament held in the French city of Strasbourg, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.

A professional tennis player from Kazakhstan Zarina Diyas has advanced into the second round of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Internationaux de Strasbourg tournament held in the French city of Strasbourg, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.

Zarina Diyas defeated the World No.22 Kirsten Flipkens from Belgium with the score of 6-2 6-7 (7/9) 6-3 in a little over two hours.

"She was a Wimbledon semifinalist and is a great player, so this helps my confidence," Diyas is quoted by Supersport, "I was trying to get her to move, I tried to go to the net and I served pretty well."

She also said that it was a tough match and it was a big win, therefore she was very happy.

Zarina Diyas from Kazakhstan is ranked 96th, but today triumph became her third Top-50 win. Her previous two were over No 49 Gisela Dulko and No 7 Jelena Jankovic in Moscow in 2010.

Now she is getting ready to face Croatia's Ajla Tomljanovic, World No. 71, who won Kristina Mladenovic 6-4 6-0 to get to the second round.

The tournament's prize pool is $250 thousand. And with her today's victory the 20-year-old Kazakh tennis player has already won herself $3.700 and 30 points to the WTA ranking.

WTA Internationaux de Strasbourg tournament is a tennis tournament held in Strasbourg, France from May 19-24, 2014. It is held since 1987, this WTA Tour event is an International-level tournament played on outdoor clay courts.

The WTA is the global leader in women's professional sport, with more than 2,500 players representing 92 nations competing for a record $118 million in prize money at the WTA's 54 events and four Grand Slams in 33 countries. Close to 5.4 million people attended women's tennis events in 2013, with millions more watching on television and digital channels around the world.
