Tennis: Kazakh Zarina Diyas in finals of Japan Open

Kazakhstani tennis professional Zarina Diyas has made it into the finals of the Japan Women's Open Tennis  held in Osaka, Japan on October 6-12, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.

Kazakhstani tennis professional Zarina Diyas has made it into the finals of the Japan Women's Open Tennis  held in Osaka, Japan on October 6-12, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.

To advance into the semifinals Kazakhstan's No 1 Zarina Diyas had to defeat 16-year-old Croatian tennis player Ana Konjuh.

In the first set, Zarina Diyas was losing 2:5 to Ana Konjuh. At this point Diyas took a medical timeout because of a problem with her hand. The 21-year-old Kazakh tennis player recovered and after returning to the court took the first set to a tie-break, but still lost to Ana Konjuh 7:6 (7:4). The second set of ended with Zarina Diyas' win with a score of 6:4. After that, she again requested a medical timeout. In the third set, Zarina Diyas left no chance to her opponent defeating her with a score of 6:2.

In the semifinals, Diyas played against Luksika Kumkhum from Thailand. And it turned out to be a much easier task than her struggles in the quarterfinals. The Kazakh tennis star had not problem beating the Thai opponent in a little over an hour. She lost only to games to her in the first set but broke her opponent three time ending it with 6:2. The victory in the second set came a little bit harder and involves two breaks - 7:5, but the Kazakh No 1 gave her Thai opponent not chance to event the score.

In the finals Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan will be playing against Samantha Stosur from Australia, the defending champion.

Former US Open winner Samantha Stosur beat Ukraine's Elina Svitolina on Saturday to reach the Japan Women's Open final.

Diyas has already got herself plus 180 rating points and $21 400 of prize money with her advancement into the final. Now more of the same and the Osaka title are at stake. If Stosur wins today, it will be her sixth career singles WTA title. For Kazakhstan’s Diyas who reached her maiden final, it will be her first title. The 2014 Osaka champ will collect $43,000.

Zarina Diyas, 21, is Kazakhstani tennis professional, who is now ranked 37th in the Women Tennis Association (WTA) rating.

2014 year was a breakthrough for Diyas. It started in the main draw of the Grand Slam. At the Australia Open, the Kazakh tennis player reached the third round while at French Open she lost in the first round. At Wimbledon, Diyas got to the 1/8 finals. She reached her best 37th position in the WTA rating after getting into the second round at the WTA Beijing 2014.

The Japan Women's Open is a professional women's tennis tournament affiliated with the WTA, and it is an international-level tournament on the WTA Tour. The prize pool of the tournament is $250,000.
