Paralympics: Kazakhstan athletes win no medals

Kazakhstan is represented by seven athletes at the London Paralympic Games. None of them have won any medals so far, but most of them were among top ten athletes in their sports however, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Sport.kz. Kazakhstan’s -44kg weight class powerlifter Kabira Askarova from Kyzylorda oblast became seventh in the final of the powerlifting tournament that was held on August 31 by lifting 65 kilograms in bench press. She lacked only one kilogram to win the sixth place and be awarded with a state prize money as it was promised by Kazakhstan sports authorities earlier. Islam Salimov, one more athlete from Kyzylorda oblast, competed in 400 meter race, but failed to qualify for the finals and could not continue his participation in the event. Salimov also participated in the Long Jump event for vision impaired athletes on September 1. He jumped 5.64 meters and was in the 12th place. Ainur Baiduldayeva from Almaty oblast failed to reach the 200 meter race finals on September 1 and had to quit the event after the Heats round. However, Ainur will take part in the 100 meter event on September 8. Kazakhstan’s -60kg powerlifter Aibek Abzhan from Kyzylorda oblast became 9th by lifting 120 kilograms in bench press. Kazakhstan's swimmer Anuar Akhmetov from Astana has already participated in men's butterfly and backstroke, but failed to win any of the events. He will compete in fresstyle on September 7 and breaststroke on September 8. One more Kazakhstan's swimmer Zulfiya Gabidullina from Taraz is going to compete in women's backstroke on September 6. Sergey Kharlamov from North Kazakhstan Oblast has already taken part in the men's 100m event and is looking towards the long jump on September 5. China with 38 gold, 26 silver, 29 bronze medals is in the first place by medal count as of today. It is followed by the UK (17, 24,15) and Russia (14,15,10). All these countries are represented by large teams of athletes at the Games and their athletes are very experienced of participating in international tournaments. Multiple-time Paralympics champions, World champions and continental tournaments’ winners are among the leaders’ teams. About 4200 athletes from 166 countries are taking part at the London Paralympics Games. 502 medals in 20 sports events are up for taking at the Paralympics. Earlier Kazakhstan Ministry of Tourism and Sport officials said that they did not expect Kazakhstan team to win any medals at the Paralimpics.
