WBA (Super) and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin will fight with interim WBC champion Marco Antonio Rubio on October 18, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
Golovkin (30-0, KOs 27) will face Rubio (59-6, KOs 51) at StubHub Center in Los Angeles. The Golovkin-Rubio fight will be live on HBO. This will be Golovkin’s 31st fight in the professional ring. In July, GGG crushed an Aussie boxer Daniel Geale in the 3rd round of a 12 round fight. Golovkin’s upcoming third fight of the year created a buzz in the media and gave rise to numerous speculations and name-throwing of who is going to face the iron-fisted Kazakhstani next.
Rubio’s last fight took place in April when he KOed Domenico Spada (39-5, KOs 19) in the 10th round of a 12 round fight in Mexico.
Earlier, Bleacherreport.com posted a list of Early Favorites for 2014 Fighter of the Year where Golovkin took the 4th place. To be short-listed, the 32 y.o. boxer needs to secure a fight with either Miguel Cotto, who does not seem to be interested in facing GGG, or Andre Ward.
