Unstoppable Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan may be clearing his path to the Fighter of the Year with his clean cut KOs, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
Bleacherreport.com has posted a list of Early Favorites for 2014 Fighter of the Year where Golovkin takes the 4th place. The unbeaten Kazakh boxer with 90% KOs defended his WBA (Super) and IBO titles against a former champ from Australia Daniel Geale. In his first fight in 2014, Golovkin won Osumanu Adama in February. Golovkin’s next fight is scheduled to October 18. However, it is yet unknown who will face GGG next. This time around, Golovkin had some difficulty finding a suitable top fighter opponent who would be willing to fight him.
To be short-listed, the 32 y.o. boxer needs to secure a fight with either Miguel Cotto, who does not seem to be interested in facing GGG, or Andre Ward. Golovkin’s coach Abel Sanchez doubted Ward’s marketability, but the American WBA and The Ring super middleweight champion is ready to fight Golovkin.
Meanwhile, a Russian sports commentator Alexander Belenky said that no top boxer wanted to risk falling from his throne by agreeing to take on Kazakhstan's Golovkin. He added that even if Golovkin got the next fight it would not be in 2014.
