Kazakhstani Gennady Golovkin (30-0, KOs 27) will face Mexican Antonio Rubio (59-6, KOs 51) in a unification fight, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
"We have decided that the fight between Golovkin and Rubio will be a unification, both are world champions and the council decided that it’s a title unification bout,” WBA president Mauricio Sulaiman said.
Rubion, in turn, will put his interim WBC middleweight champion title on the line against WBA (Super) and IBO middleweight championship titles Golovkin holds.
“The winner of this fight would go against Cotto, who could make a voluntary defense of his title at the end of the year, which is still undetermined. It will be a great fight and it’s very good for the division which has excellent world champions,” Sulaiman added.
This maybe Golovkin’s chance to finally face Cotto in the ring. Earlier, Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach said that his boxer was not interested in facing Golovkin, because GGG was not marketable.
Golovkin’s 31st fight against Rubio will take place at StubHub Center in Los Angeles on October 18.
