Galysheva finishes fifth in moguls at FIS Freestyle Ski World Championship in Austria

Kazakhstan’s athlete Yuliya Galysheva, 22, has come fifth at the Women’s Moguls Final of the FIS Freestyle Ski World Championship that is taking place now in Kreischberg, Austria, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz. The championship started on January 15 and will last until January 25.

Canadian Justine Dufour-Lapointe, 20, who is the reigning Olympic champion in the moguls, clinched gold in the moguls by scoring 87.25 points.  

Vancouver Olympic Champion and bronze prizewinner of 2014 Sochi Olympics Hannah Kearney from the United States won a silver medal with 85.66. Australian Britteny Cox hauled bronze with 81.91 points.

Kazakhstan’s athlete Galysheva received 79.30 points, thus getting the fifth place in the overall rankings.

Yuliya Galysheva has been competing at the international tournaments since March 2006. She debuted at the Europa Cup stage in Russian Saint-Petersburg. She was 21st in mogul and 18th in dual moguls then.

Galysheva got her first World Cup victory at the Meribel when she came ahead of Hannah Kearney in the final of dual moguls. In 2011, she won gold medals at the 2011 Asian Winter Games in moguls and dual moguls. In 2011, she also won in the Europa Cup stage in Jyväskylä. Next year, she became the World Champion among juniors in moguls and won the silver medal in dual moguls at the Italian Valmalenco.

However, earlier this year Galysheva announced her decision to quit her professional skiing career after the Sochi Olympics. The skier claimed that she was judged unfairly ion Russia and she had no desire to continue competing. At the Sochi Olympics, Galysheva took the 7th place. The score she was given raised a wave of questions to the jury. But in late October Galysheva changed her mind and said she would continue competing.

In mid-December, she took part in the Freestyle Skiing World Cup held in Ruka, Finland, which was her first start after the Olympics in Sochi. At that championship, Kazakh athlete managed to win a gold medal in dual moguls by beating Hannah Kearney in the semifinals and a sister of Justine Dufour-Lapointe, Chloe Dufour-Lapointe, a silver prizewinner of Sochi Olympics, in the finals.
