Chavez (48-1-1, 32KOs) was not satisfied with the conditions of the contract offered by Top Rank. The Mexican boxer was especially not happy with the guaranteed minimum per fight offered by Top Rank.

The company got into negotiations with Chavez and offered a new contract. According to Abel Sanchez, Golovkin’s coach, the negotiations would be finished in a week time.

“The fight’s about 99 percent done. There’s one or two little issues that are really insignificant, it should be done by Monday. Bob (Arum), I think, gets back from a trip on Sunday, so (the fight) should be done by Monday or Tuesday,” Sanchez told BoxingScene.com.

But even if Golovkin-Chavez fight does not work out, GGG would still have a fight on July 19th but this time in New York with another boxer.

Golovkin is still in Kazakhstan mourning the death of his father.

“He’s supposed to come back (to the United States) in May. As far as who he would fight on July 19th if it’s not Chavez, we haven’t really talked about that yet. Right now a couple of minor things need to be negotiated, but I talked to (ZanFer executive) Sean (Gibbons), and I think the Chavez fight is close to done, ” Sanchez said.

Golovkin-Chavez is a highly anticipated fight that according to some predictions might be a prime candidate for the 2014 Fight of the Year.
